Recently, our product team sat down for an insightful conversation on trends being seen in personalized learning technology. During this talk, our product experts delved into the exciting developments and challenges MindPlay Education has been navigating in the realm of reading intervention.
Meet the Team
Michelle Brandon: As the Product Marketing Manager, Michelle plays a pivotal role in bringing MindPlay’s innovative solutions to educators and students.
Brian Williams: Brian has been a cornerstone of MindPlay for 13 years, starting as a software engineer and progressing to Vice President of Product. His journey through the company has seen him influence numerous product decisions and innovations. Beyond his professional life, Brian is an Army dad residing in Tucson, Arizona, with hobbies like beekeeping, gardening, and cycling.
Brian’s Background & Contributions
Brian’s tenure at MindPlay began in the engineering department, where his knack for innovation quickly became apparent. His transition into product management has allowed him to specialize and hone the products that MindPlay offers, ensuring they meet the needs of educators and students alike. His personal passions, particularly his love for the outdoors, mirror his dedication and heart-driven approach to his professional responsibilities.
The Current Landscape of Reading Intervention
When asked about the reading intervention challenges on which MindPlay has been keeping a pulse, Brian noted the vast changes being seen and felt nationwide.
“The landscape of reading intervention has been significantly impacted in recent years, particularly since the onset of COVID-19,” William says. “Even though it has been some time, the effects are still evident, and we’ve learned a lot during this period. The influx of new entrants into the reading intervention market has highlighted several shortcomings in existing solutions.”
Key Challenges and Observations
- Foundational Skills Gaps: Many current solutions fail to address foundational skills gaps with targeted instruction. Essential components like phonemic awareness, phonics, and vocabulary development are often overlooked or inadequately covered.
- Support for Teachers: Many solutions place additional demands on teachers. While classroom instruction focuses on skill practice and reinforcement, there is a lack of comprehensive, high-interest texts that engage and motivate students.
- Differentiated Needs: Struggling readers have diverse needs, yet many existing programs do not differentiate effectively to meet these varied requirements. Teachers may need to adapt their strategies to meet individual student needs, often without sufficient support from the tools available.
MindPlay’s Innovative Approach
Brian discussed a transformative idea developed by the product team: presenting a holistic view of individual students through a skills profile and redesigned reporting system. This approach emerged from extensive research with teachers to understand their journey and the challenges they face. The goal was to streamline data presentation and make it more intuitive for educators.
Personalized Learning System
A key component of this innovative approach was the development of a personalized learning system. Personalized learning systems are designed to tailor educational experiences to meet the unique needs of each student.
Here are some of the core elements of this system:
- Individualized Learning Paths: Each student follows a customized learning path that adapts to their specific strengths and weaknesses. Then, all students receive instruction and practice in areas where they need the most support.
- Adaptive Technology: The system uses adaptive technology to continually assess student performance and adjust the difficulty of tasks in real-time. This dynamic adjustment helps keep students engaged and challenged at an appropriate level.
- Data-Driven Insights: Teachers receive detailed, actionable insights into student progress. These insights support educators in making informed decisions about interventions and instructional strategies.
- Engaging Content: High-interest texts and interactive activities motivate students. Relevant, engaging content maintains student interest and promotes a love of reading.
- Support for Foundational Skills: The personalized learning system emphasizes foundational skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, and vocabulary development. These skills are essential for building strong reading capabilities.
Success with Early Access Customers
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive when early access customers saw the new “spider chart” reports. These visual reports were immediately understandable, which helped teachers to identify how best to assist their students. This innovation simplified a previously-complex process, proving that a straightforward change backed by thorough research and user feedback can have a profound impact.
Investment in Design and User Research
MindPlay is now inspired to invest more heavily in design and user research thanks to the positive reception of the new reporting system. In the future, the team aims to uncover more opportunities to enhance the user experience, ensuring that their products continue to meet the evolving needs of educators and students.
Conclusion
In summary, this Q&A session with Brian Williams highlighted MindPlay Education’s commitment to addressing the challenges in reading intervention with innovative solutions. By focusing on user-centric design and thorough research, MindPlay empowers educators and improves student outcomes.
