MindPlay’s New Comprehensive Reading Course for Educators Equips Teachers with the Knowledge They Need to Help All Students Learn to Read!

Online course addresses crucial role of in-depth professional development in supporting developing and struggling readers.

October 12, 2018, Tucson, AZ—–MindPlay online reading and literacy publisher announces the addition of their newest professional development product, the Mindplay Comprehensive Reading Course for Educators (MCRC), to their Teacher Academy suite of solutions. This course targets general education teachers, special education teachers, reading teachers, school psychologists, and speech-language therapists who deal with diverse age ranges and skill levels.   It draws upon current scientific research to explain the kind of instruction that students need to learn to read accurately and fluently, and how teachers can teach those skills effectively.

The Need

Studies show that only 40 percent of US children score at or above “Proficient” in reading on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and that 74 percent of children who fail to read proficiently by third grade are at risk for dropping out of high school. They also document that 44 states have passed legislation on dyslexia that often includes mandates for increased teacher training in reading instruction.

“The science of reading confirms that we know how to teach reading, and that investing in teachers is the key,” says Dr. Nancy Mather, one of the authors of the course, as well as an expert on dyslexia. “Our challenge now is to do it. We need to ensure that all of our students become successful readers.”

What the Course Offers

By enrolling in MCRC, teachers will learn how to provide systematic and explicit reading and spelling instruction that is informed by current reading research. The course provides strategies for enhancing all aspects of reading performance, including phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.

The 10-module multimedia course comprises 30 to 40 hours of instruction, including visual presentations with accompanying narration, teaching demonstrations, video excerpts from national experts, supplemental materials, and pre- and post-tests that assess understanding.

MCRC offers an in-depth understanding of how our English language works. Along with MindPlay’s Understanding Dyslexia course, it addresses many of the Standards for Teachers of Reading identified by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA).

Course Flexibility

MCRC is online and self-paced, allowing busy educators to move through it at times and rates convenient to them.

Individuals may take the course independently, or as part of a teacher preparation and professional development program. The course can provide three hours of graduate credit and as well as Continuing Education Credits (CEUs).

MCRC is now available at http://mindplay.com/teacher-programs/comprehensive-reading-course/at a price of $199.
