LESSON 12: Changing normal pausing
OBJECTIVE: The learner will play with
pausing, inflection and voice volume, changing the pause points learned
earlier.
We frequently omit some of the possible pause points in a long sentence, like the one you are reading,
that has many prepositions.
John and Mary
walked up the hill carrying books.
We could pause or inflect at all the points indicated. But we would most
likely omit some. We might read this sentence in this way:
John and Mary walked up the hill
carrying books.
Notice that we would stress or inflect the words, but we might not pause
before or after them. It's a matter of personal style. Whether you
inflect or pause, knowing the pause points will help with comprehension.
Make sure the learner is comprehending well before you try this exercise.
Have him read each sentence, pausing at the spaces or inflecting on the
word before the spaces. Notice that the picture changes with the way it
is read.
-
John wrecked the car on Saturday.
-
John wrecked the car on Saturday.
-
John wrecked the car on Saturday.
-
John wrecked the car on Saturday.
-
John wrecked the car on Saturday.
-
John wrecked the car on Saturday.
This is meant to be fun! How we talk determines who will listen to us.
When we talk well with emphasis, inflection and appropriate pausing and
read like we talk, we easily understand what we read. We won't put
ourselves to sleep as we read, either.
